Glosso - How substrate dependent is it?

I have always had luck with Glosso grown in Eco-Complete in a high tech/EI tank. I am contemplating using my spare 50gal as a stereotypical Amano Glosso/Rock tank, and I am wondering if I can get away with using something cheap like plain gravel instead of EC. Lighting would be 260w CF with ~30ppm CO2 and using the EI.

Does anyone have any experience with Glosso in a cheap substrate/high tech tank? I am curious about how much the substrate matters in a tank like that.

I introduced glosso to my tank about 3 weeks ago I think and it has taken off like wild fire. My substrate is simple river sand/gravel that I pulled straight out the river myself. Nothing fancy there. I use EI and only have about 2.4wpg of NO Flourescents. Your setup should be more than fine. Just make sure you use small enough sand/gravel to make planting easier.

What did you do to prepare the gravel? I am thinking of doing the same for a 15g I have in my extra bedroom.

Also, are you using CO2?

I am using CO2 (pressurized).

As for prepping the gravel... All I did was rinse it -thoroughly- since I pulled this out of a river. There is no telling what all was in it but it was definately full of natural mulm and multitudes of fresh water clams. I decided to remove them as well, which took a lot of time.

I live in the Hudson River Valley and have considered using gravel from some of the local streams (or "kills" as they are known around here) for the aforementioned 15g.
