Hey all.

I'm not sure if this is a deficiency or the way I planted my ludwiga

It tends to grow roots from each node.

I planted the stem well into the substrate...

This also happened with other stem plants I had before...but according to many stem plants I see in ppl's photos, I do not see all that many roots producing, especially areas that are way above the substrate.

any ideas?

TIA.

Re: roots producing at each node

It's common for stem plants to produce roots from the stem above the substrate. I have Ammania Gracilis, Bacopa Moniera and Carolinina, Lysimanchia Nummularia (creeping Jenny) Hygro Polysperma, and especially Ludwigia Repens all sprouting roots. After a while it can look a bit untidy. When they are trimmed I usually snip off any remaining roots.

Likewise my Ludwigia and Alternathera do the same. What I have found is that the Ludwigia loses lots of leaves without bright light.

Re: roots producing at each node

in my 10G...I have about 30W NO flourescent...my ludwiga repen 'Rubin' grows nice and straight towards the light...no roots on each node

in my 45G...I have 2x96 CF..my ludwiga repen bents towards the lighting...and there are root on almost each node...

I was wondering if it may be a lighting issue?
I also have some assorted stem plants in the 10G that do no have roots...whereas in the past, my rotalas all had similar roots in my 45G

Re: roots producing at each node

I have the same issue in my 120. I have 330W of light but the tank is 24 inches deep. The plants lean toward the front of the tank instead of growing straight (there is a nearby window). They also have roots at each node that I have been leaving alone. Since I have had some algea issues I am fighting I figured I would let the plants use all the weapons they have to out compete the algea.

I don't know the answer ... but intuitively, I would suspect that in a high light environment, its a natural result of plant's developing the natural structures necessary to deliver the nutrients it needs to fuel the growth being **driven** by the light ... but that's just my gut instinct ...

We always seem to talk about carbon, macros, and micros ... we often seem to leave out the light ...

P.S. I'm looking forward to the next issue of the Barr Report ...
