I've been in the hobby for about 7 years now. I used to read hobby-related forums a lot- this one was always one of my favorites (though I was just a lurker) because I love that opinions and recommendations are empirically based, rather than just based what so-and-so said.

Anyways, I've continuously had one 20 gallon L tank for those years, but I lost interest in keeping up with the hobbyist world after my other tank- a 10 gallon- got nuked due to what I believe was mycobacterium. It was rather heartbreaking, plus I had started a PhD program and didn't have a lot of time for free reading.

The plants in my 20 were starting to show my lack of interest, and in seeking to rectify that recently, my interest has been renewed. (It also probably has to do with dissertation-writing procrastination.) So, here I am, getting the 20 back in shape and working on the reincarnation of the ill-fated 10.

I would love to have more and bigger tanks, but my house is tiny, and my stupid partner decided to bring home two red eared sliders some years ago. I dream of one day making turtle soup and turning that 55 that they're in into a fish tank. (Kidding!)

As a turtle conservationist, one of my missions in life is to convince people not to buy pet turtles. I have failed again. Welcome to the forum! Tell your partner that 55 gallons is too small for two sliders. They'll be hanging around for another 50-60 years or so(maybe longer!) and you might as well invest in a good enclosure that you can will to your kids along with the turtles. You can have the 55 when the turtles get an upgrade but maybe don't mention that right away.
