That won't soften water. It also only has a lifetime of 100 gallons. If your tank is big, that won't last very long. It's meant mostly to filter drinking water, reducing chlorine and removing bacteria and some heavy metals.

To soften water, you need an RO filter. That will reduce ALL dissolved components of the water. Something like one of these: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulk.../reverse-osmosis-systems/4-stage-systems.html

Thx Christophe! I'm trying to avoid getting this kind of unit and find the easiest route. I guess I have to face reality to get one. In my city the water is on the hard side

Hard water in itself is no deal-breaker for a planted tank. Lots of people around here are doing successful tanks on rather hard water.

yeah I know but there are certain plants thrive more in softer water like Ludwigia Pantanal.

+1 @Christophe . Those faucet filters will do nothing for softening the water, and are pitifully small for what they try to do.

If it’s a small tank, like 5 gallons or less, you can get distilled water at the grocery store. Larger tanks, 20g or more ro is definitely the way to go, unless you like carrying jugs around.

Yeah, I know, but some plants, like Ludwigia Pantanal, do better in softer water.
That isn't going to soften the water. It also only has a 100 gallon lifespan. That won't last long if your tank is large. It's primarily designed to filter drinking water, eliminating germs and certain heavy metals while decreasing chlorine.

An RO filter is required to soften water. This will decrease ALL of the water's dissolved components. Something along the lines of: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulk.../reverse-osmosis-systems/4-stage-systems.html

Of course, plants like Ludwigia Pantanal thrive in softer water.
That won't soften the water at all. In addition, the tank's lifetime is limited to 100 gallons. When you have a huge tank, it won't be the case for long. Its primary purpose is to filter water for human consumption, removing bacteria and some heavy metals while reducing chlorine.

Water softening requires the use of a RO filter. ALL of the dissolved components in water will be reduced as a result. More in the vein of:
