Hi Dkoi,
Nice tank !
But how do you deal with algae with the fluval led light?
With mine I had so much algae issue that I removed it
Now I have tropical led from dennerle 48w
Since that I have no algae issue anymore
Hi,
Thanks ! I use the dimmer most of the time. Lights are 20 " from the substrate , so PAR is about 66. I have had every kind of algae, but is better now with stable c02 & EI dosing [emoji4]
Love the Fluval LED lights !!

Also I forgot to mention. I didn't have a problem with the lights in the beginning because I planted my tank heavy from the start. I did not start fertilizers until the root tabs were depleted at the 3 month mark. That may be why you got a lot of algae. Your plants weren't using the fertilizer & with the high lighting , it's a recipe for an algae bloom. Now that my plants have good root system I have turned up the light intensity & use the EI dosing. I did get bba a month ago, but reducing the lights tends to make it go away pretty quick. Here's a " before & after "

Day 10 :

I did the second WC yesterday @day 9

water column after WC
NO3 10ppm
PO4 0 ppm
K > 40 ppm
Mg 6 ppm
Fe 0 ppm

dosage :
NO3 : nothing
PO4 1ppm 3x/week
Fe 0,2 ppm 3x/week
K : nothing

I have always NO3 in my aquarium but I add nothing
I'll check if it's comes from RO water

PO4 : I don't understand why it's still at 0 after 48h

Fe : I don't understand why it's still at 0 after 48h

K : high level coming from KH2PO4 and from K2CO3

I have some questions :

I have green algaes so I trun down my light from 8h to 6h and from 100% to 80%
I have dennerle tropica 48w 4480 lumens for 125L or 33G

But Eleocharis is dying

what should I do ?

increasing my light for more photosynthesis but I already have green algae
increasing Fe ? how much ?
increasing PO4 ? I add already 1ppm 3xWeek and still 0 after 48h

Thank for your help !

I'm no expert but,

don't be afraid of a little nutrient excess, that won't cause algae.
reducing the photoperiod and intensity was a good idea

NO3 shouldn't be coming from the R/O

ADA soil rich in nutrients and some ammonia Probably why you have NO3. If you are bottoming out on phosphate and iron I would up the KH2PO4 and traces. I'm sure the hair grass will rebound, some of mine was browning and dieing like that, but most of it survived and spread, give it a haircut and it should spread faster horizontally

For your tank you are dosing more than enough PO4. If you see GSA then you can up the dosing but 5-6ppm dose should easily be more than enough.
The soil being new might be stripping some of that.
Let the tank settle before making more changes.

Adjusting the lighting like you have done, and increasing the PO4 should help avoid too much GSA

Rajkm is saying the substrate might be taking some of the nutrients, could be why you are seeing zero PO4 and Iron

Hi all,

here are the news of the second week (day 14)

I did the third water change (75%)

And I put my "old" fish from my previous tank (cardinalis and ramirezi)

after water change and addition of GH+ my Water column was :
NO3 : 5-10 ppm
PO4 : still 0
K : 20ppm
Fe : 0.2 ppm (I did a mistake during last week and I had Fe @ 1ppm before WC)

After addition of macro and micro my water column is :
NO3 : 10ppm
PO4 : 0.5ppm
K : 25ppm
Fe : 0.2 ppm
conductivity : 300µs

Daily dose :
NO3 : 1ppm
PO4 : 0.6ppm
K : 3.4ppm (added via K2CO3)
Fe : 0.05ppm
easy carbo : standard dose
CO2 : 20-30ppm
GH : 5
KH : 0
pH : 5.7 - 6.2

Green dust algae are under control but still there
maybe the high level of Fe could induce this algae ?

although I did a big water change, I keep my light low (7h @ 70%)

here are the calculation of my PAR :

@ front glass :

upload_2017-8-7_9-51-8.png

@ back glass :

upload_2017-8-7_9-51-38.png

So @ 100% intensity I'm between 60 and 80 PAR

I'm now @70% intensity so I must be between 42 and 56 PAR during 7h

do you think it's enough or should I increase my photoperiod up to 8h ?

what do you think about intesity ? is it right ?

Your tank looks great. Which site did you use for those estimate calculations?

@Coasters13 thanks for the feedback on the Calculators, it's good to see that they are almost there, obviously we can't test all lighting on the market without donations or spending lots of money :) so a lot of the results are based on information like the dennerle datasheet.

If your taking light suggestions, Fluval line of lights some people have now and is pretty common im seeing such as Aquasky or something

Yes it would be a great feature to have results based on a brand, type of light rather than just say led etc as they are all different, again only way is for the manufacturer to provide that information, send us the lights to test or for Hobbiests to test, log and send us the results and then we can add that data similar to what we do now with the Nutrient Calculator and premixed branded ferts.

Sounds pretty darn sophisticated! can you ask them for a sponsorship or something in order to do that?

Hi all,

here are some news of my aquarium 3 weeks after the start up

GSA are still there but under controle.

I reduced my light, I'm now at 8h for 70% intensity (I have the Dennerle 48W 4480 lumens 90cm n°5556 - see table above)

so my PAR is about 38 - 54

Since my aquasoil is pumping my PO4 very fast I changed my Fert dosing (see my post here : )

https://barrreport.com/threads/is-aquasoil-ada-amazonia-light-powder-pumping-po4.14444/

I'm now adding EI daily dose

NO3 : 3.4ppm/day
PO4 : 0.6ppm/day
K : 3.4ppm/day via K2CO3

and I'm not adding Fe via trace because my Fe level is too high
Fe was at 0.8ppm, after big WC it's now at 0.2 ppm

I'll check the Fe and select the right dosing, may be half of the dose

but it seems that eleocharis mini is not pumping my Fe too much

I added Amano shrimps (5) to see if they are in nice place in my aquarium because my pH (6.0) is a little bit too low for them

I'll add more if they don't die

my Ramirezy is also building a nest ... may be for new babies soon ^^

here are some pictures

BINGO !!!!! I found were my PO4 is going out !!!!

it's not in the ADA amazonia light powder aquasoil as I though some weeks ago

see me previous trial : https://barrreport.com/threads/is-aquasoil-ada-amazonia-light-powder-pumping-po4.14444/

my PO4 is precipitated in my aquarium !

this is why I always have PO4 = 0 ppm even with EI dosing

here are the picture of the top of my aquarium and the PO4 is there !!!! (it's the bubles) :

20170821_183102.jpg

I took the bubles in a glass :

20170821_183131.jpg

I put it in a test kit for PO4 :

20170821_204606.jpg

and here are the results :

20170821_205135.jpg

!!!! I remind you that the water of my aquarium is PO4 = 0 !!!

everything is in the bubles on the top of the water

do you had such experiment ?

I add in my aquarium :

- MgSO4 and CaSO4 (for GH = 5)

- K2CO3 (juste a few ppm as buffer KH = 0.15)

- KNO3
- KH2PO4
- Element trace mix for Fe and traces

I add only RO water and I do 50% water change every weeks

please could you help me to find how I can put PO4 in the water column ?

I ask me some questions if it's not link to the new ADA aquasoil because ADA removed PO4 from liquid fert

now it's not step 1 - step 2 - step 3 etc any more

it's a new line WITHOUT PO4 ......

is it possible to grow plants without PO4 in the water column ?

thanks for your help !

Just wondering if you get the same results/readings out of the tank?

  • Jar of your tank water and no substrate.
  • Jar of your tank water with some of the substrate.
  • Jar of just your ro water and nothing else
  • Etc.

Hi jason,

I did a trial some weeks ago :

here are the results :

my issue is :
I put 1 ppm of PO4 in my tank, 5 minutes after I checked the PO4 in my tank and it was @ 1ppm (confirm with a standard made by myself) so the PO4 is in my tank at a good concentration : (liquid fert is ok and is not the issue)
12 hours after adding 1ppm of PO4 in my tank, I checked the PO4 in my tank and it was @ 0 ppm !!! so the question was where was my PO4 ???

what I did :
https://barrreport.com/threads/is-aquasoil-ada-amazonia-light-powder-pumping-po4.14444/

I put ADA aquasoil with RO water, immediately checked the PO4 and it was @ 0ppm
I put ADA aquasoil with a standard solution of PO4 1ppm, immediatelty checked the PO4 and it was @ ~0.5ppm (PO4 already pump by aquasoil)
I put a standard solution of PO4 1ppm as standard, immediatelty checked the PO4 and it was @ 1ppm

I waited 12hours (1 night) and checked the PO4 again
I put ADA aquasoil with RO water - 12 hours after : No PO4
I put ADA aquasoil with a standard solution of PO4 1ppm - 12 hours after : No PO4 !!!
I put a standard solution of PO4 1ppm as standard - 12 hours after : 1ppm of PO4

So the conclusion for me was : ADA aquasoil was pumping my PO4 and the PO4 was in the soil et available for roots plants

BUT

since some days I saw some bubles with some solid and precipitate on the top of my aquarium
I stopped EI dosing and here is what I did in my tank :

- day 1 : No liquid fert : no bubles
- day 2 : addition of KNO3 only (NO3 = 3.4ppm) : no bubles
- day 3 : addition of K2CO3 only (K = 3.4ppm) : no bubles
- day 4 : addition of K2SO4 only (K = 3.4ppm) : no bubles
- day 5 : addition of KH2PO4 (PO4 = 0.6 ppm) : BUBLES !!! (after a few hours)

I took the bubles and checked the PO4 and bingo, it was the PO4
at the same time, if I took the water of my tank without bubles, my PO4 is 0 ppm !!!

conclusions :
tank water without bubles : PO4 = 0
tank water with bubles : PO4 > 8 ppm !!!

the questions are why PO4 is precipitated ?
1) PO4 reacts with ADA aquasoil and precipitates ?
2) PO4 precipitates because my KH is too low (I add only RO water and just a few ppm of K2CO3 as a buffer) ?
3) PO4 reacts with someting in my water column but what ?

I will do some trials and keep you inform but my PO4 in my column water of my tank is always @ 0ppm
