Hello All

I hope that it is ok to post here if not mods remove or move.

I finally got my stand built and it is well made and straight. 3/"4 plywood top and 2x6 inner construction.

I placed the tank on the stand, and although all four corners of the tank touch the top of the stand the bottom trim of the tank both front and back do not. This starts at the middle and goes to about 6" from each corner. The sides do not do this.

250 gallons 60"L x 36"W x 27"H

Should I be concerned?

Hard to capture in a picture removed weirs going with a hob life reef and using an old ehiem for a closed loop

FYI .085" clearance max at middle between the top of stand and bottom trim then gradually decreases to no gap about 6" from each corner.

Thanks David

It's hard to tell from the dark picture but from what i can see the stand looks like its well supported so you should be good.

A better picture will confirm this.

Honestly, I'd want to know why the tank is not sitting on the tank everywhere. 250 gallons is ~2000 lbs and if its not supported evenly on all sides, that means the points of contact are taking up alot more of the weight. Maybe this is a common occurrence, but I have never seen a tank that didn't contact evenly on all sides. Perhaps a dumb question, but does a level show the top of the stand to be perfectly flat? Same for the bottom of the tank. If it were me, I would investigate further before filling.

When you say the trim do you mean just the plastic and not the actual tank itself? And also is that centre support I see at the front middle or at the back?

Please post a better picture of both the top and front.

Thanks

Hey Jason,

I appreciate your efforts. That center brace on the stand is at the back I put it there so that I might mount a light rack to. From what I understand my stand is of sound construction. Some people on other forums say its good, others say no. Those that say its good have seemingly sound reasons. Those that say no seem to think that the tank should be supported all the way around. I can slide the tank off the edge of the stand a bit, and when I put my 4 foot level on it is is not perfectly flat and the same gap appears although not as great at the back of the tank.. So based on this I can point to the trim being at fault. Some say and have shown through pictures that they have the same occurrence. Surprisingly common. A local reef guy who has this same tank had this same thing occur on his build with a diy stand. He said that he shimmed the gaps with cedar shims. The trim on this tank is very wide so the shim would only go part way through under the trim. IMHO not a perfect solution, but he has had no issues.

The thing about this is that if I bought the commercial stand, I would never have noticed this as they have a top trim piece on the stand that would obscure this revelation.

Perhaps a call and a visit from the vendor might be inorder. Some say just to place some Styrofoam between the tank and stand to elevate any irregularities.

Its a framed tank.

You could theoretically support the tank on 4 posts supporting each corner and the tank will live a long and prosperous life.

If, the gap bothers you, wait 3 days and maybe the filled tank will settle or slip some yoga mat strips under the whole frame and be done.

When you take pictures of the tank, the lower frame won't be in the picture because tank pics look better with a slight upward angle. As if your are snorkeling in it.

Annoying. But far less so than the flood you might have experienced if it let go.

I think that I may go a little.bit smaller this time. Handbombing the 400 lbs tank down a flight of stairs was a little nerve wracking to say the least. Hard to say if that is what contributed to the tanks demise or not. Very grateful for the refund.......but much money time and mental/emotional energy has been spent.........exhausting to say least.
