Here's the progress on the stand thus far. The stand is a little bit longer than the tank. Rather than the usual holes on the sides of the stand they will be on the top of the cabinet so the inlet / return hoses go straight down into the stand. A bit like the design on the bottom of this page, but only on one side.

The construction was done using 3/4" MDO plywood with the exception of the front header, which is solid cherry. All joints are rabbeted and screwed and glued using pocket hole screws. I'm still in search of some veneer that is wide enough to do bookmatched doors on the front. Excuse the glue residue. I applied the veneer using a veneer hammer and hide glue and have yet to clean up the excess. The solid cherry header is backed by a piece of 3/4" MDO plywood and is super strong. I can sit on the front in the middle and there is no flex and I'm about 185 lbs. The header has yet to be veneered as well. I chose solid wood there because at one time I considered doing a very slight bevel on it to mimic the bevels on the glass of the aquarium.

That's a nice looking unit. I would like to see the finished stand with tank. I think that the tank off set on the stand would look good. I was thinking about making one soon similar but I was worried about the weight displacement. Let me know how you go.

I love Cherry wood and have a bunch of it all sizes , also a complete wood shop, so I can make into stuff.

Planer, joiner, table saw, router table band saw's etc..

That Walnut , Birch, Maple,Polar are my favorite woods.

Good job so not to big a tank Then?

Nice so far and the hide glue wow that is the old way,

Wood craft might have what you are looking for, I use to get mine from a Pop wood store, but long gone now.:(

Yeah, I used the hide glue for a few different reasons. For one it's pretty cheap, it's reversible, and the way I designed the stand it was veneered after being assembled so even if I did have a vacuum press or something like that it wouldn't fit in it. :)

So, better late than never right? :D I used a wipe on poly in satin finish and did 3 coats. The inside is a gloss white enamel and the doors have 170° Blum soft close hinges and magnetic tot locks to keep the little guy out.

A simple loc line return with a elbow is all that's needed, the spray bar thing is not needed.

Great looking stand and I like the added length for the intake and return lines. I was thinking of building a wood "chimney" cover to hide my lines/overflow so my 14 month old can't get all grabby grabby.

As for the return, SS always works. I like mine

Thanks. :) Those SS returns are pretty slick. Where'd you get them? I'd do a glass lily return if it weren't for the same grabby hands issue in my household. ;)

Clear PVC works, Loc line also.

Loc line you can adjust a lot more too.

I have used clear PVC also but with time I was dissatisfied as they dirtied and discolored. Loc lines are quite adjustable this is true, but I was looking for a more refined look that SS offered and basically no cleaning necessary.

AaronT, I organized a group but at a different forum sometime back for these from what was called Aquarium HK but now is Hinterfeld.com I believe. Not cheap but decent quality. It was a SS skimmer inflow and outflow that came with two outflow nipples. I just turned both into outflows when I sumped the tank. This way I keep up a high turn over volume with a lower velocity.
