Plant Of The Week!

As you've seen the plant database is coming along nicely but still has lots of work.

I'm thinking what if we use the plant posts in this forum as a place togather as much information on that plant as possible..

So each week, say Monday (today is the first one) we change the plant of the week, in that week we try and get members to talk and share all types of information just for that plant and next week the next plant..

All information and images that we gather within that thread can then be used for that particular plant in the database.

In particular the cultivation of the plant in aquariums, all other knowledge and information is also valid.

We are also looking for someone to be incharge of this.. you would be incontrol of announcing and posting the plant of the week etc, get members going and talking about the plant. Interested? Please PM me @Jason King

Starting with A then finally onto Z as time passes.

Hi Raj,

it would be great if you could add more about how can one determine the different varieties of Tonina fluviatilis ( regular, lotus blossom, narrow leaf...). Maybe you can take photos one vs the other for comparison.

You may have been sold this plant under another name such as Echinodorus rigidifolius. Any general experience regarding large Echinodorus plants is always welcomed.

How best to propagate the plant ?
How large do the leaves get in adult plants ?

What about the dreaded rhizome rot ? Why ? How to stop it ?

What did you use to anchor this plant to wood or rocks ?

Some temporary twine - for a few weeks, then can be removed. This plant will not hold in light substrat - I use some clay / ceramic disc which are used by plants sellers in the plant baskets:

I bury it under substrate, of course.

How best to propagate the plant ?

Just cut rhyzom when it's long enough.

How large do the leaves get in adult plants?

About 3 cm long.

What makes it flower ?

It is not unusual when the plant is emersed. Some says that high phosphates (2+ mg/l) will help to flower submersed.

How do you get rid of algae from older leaves ?

This plant is very slow, much slower than algae on strong light. The best is prevention - placing in shadow area. It really doesn't need much light.

Here Allwissend, these are pictures of Anubias.....I honestly don't remember if it's nana... I took these right before murdering them in my tank. They aren't very healthy. This plant left such a lasting impression on me I didn't include it in my new setup. I don't think I will ever scrub those algae covered leaves out of my mind! I remember @fablau had a nice picture of one somewhere in his journal. I just remember envying those clean leaves on his plant.

This moss does not seem to attach readily to wood and the growth pattern seems to be more random than Christmas moss.

The question of the day is how do you make it weep ?

It will also be interesting to see how do attach it, keep it clean and trim it.

This moss is one of the faster growing mosses (very fast) that just piles on top of each other
It attaches emmersed but its growth submerged it just doesn't or at least i have seen
making it weep its either a stage in its life that does it
or moderate light(no shading), high o2
Nutrients will make the moss thicker
I've gotten it to weep both ways, a certain period, and right away
Good o2 levels i see is the key
Doesn't have to be in the current but surface agitation anywhere in the tank is good
A lot of fake's going around, a lot of real's as well (just ppl can't get it weeping)

Originating from SE Asia, the plant of the week is one of the more unruly but easy to grow Pogostemon:
Pogostemon Quadrifolius

A little late update this week, but we continue with another easy plant,

Hygrophila polysperma

as plant of the week.

I think pretty much everybody with a planted tank had this plant at one point or another.

They call it invasive, a weed, a great nutrient remover, a superb flowering floating plant... we just call it plant of the week:

Eichhornia azurea

At the begging of March, we usually had the first flowers of spring, snow melting... This week we have snow shoveling, a cup of tea and aquatic plants , especially the plant of the week

This is a classic and one of the red plants that survives in the hand of many beginners. How do you get it red ? What enhances root formation and can you trim those ugly roots ?

Just wanted to share a photo of L. repens 'Mesakana' . Very similar in behaviour but gets a nice golden/organge tint and keeps its round leaves.
