Trying to ID this plant for a friend. He collected it from a cold water lake in the Eastern Sierra where we live . The tank he has it in is cold water. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Don't think it's parrot feather.
More like myriophyllum tuberculatum red.
Parrot feather has more petioles per node, pic shows 4 per node.

Maybe not this wouldn't be in the US???

Possible Myriophyllum heterophyllum???

It's definitely Myriophyllum. It's not M. aquaticum and from the number of leaflet pairs it's not M. spicatum. Probably either Northern Milfoil (M. sibiricum) or Whorled Milfoil (M. verticillatum).

Both of your suggestions could be in/near Eastern Sierra area.
How to explain the red??? variant???

I've seen a lot of reddish milfoil in natural waters. I think the red varieties are special in that they will stay red under comparatively dim aquarium lights. The golden-green milfoil I'm growing in my tank was pretty red when I collected it.
