Hello from the great white north

Hello everyone,

My name is Dan and I'm from Canada. I have a little experience with planted tanks and about 6-7 months ago I took the plunge into the hi tech world and have since spent my free time over the last 8 or so months reading and researching everything and anything I can to help me in this venture that often times led me here. Truth be told I come from a fish keeping/breeding background for many years and did not realize a planted tank could be so complicated when trying to understand all of the variables at play.

I find this site to be extremely informative with a great knowledge base of people and it was easy to justify the membership fee.

Fair warning I like to question things until I understand them so please don't take offence to that. Some of you I have seen on TPT which is another forum I frequent. Yay/Boo???

Currently I have a 55G planted hi tech with a diy sandfall and an Amano breeding project that consists of several containers, tanks and things of that sort. At my peak in the hobby I had well over 20 tanks and thousands of fish.

I'm looking forward to learning from you all and hopefully I can contribute here and there.

Tank is a bit of a mess right now, I have been paying more attention to breeding my Amano shrimp lately which is no excuse. I will be removing the AR mini off the water fall and replacing with IDK yet. Any idea? Par would be quite high in that area 80-100.

Yes I get what you mean in terms of the simpleton and I agree cool people. Previous to 8 months ago to give you an idea I had only kept absolute low light easy growers such as anubias, java moss, java fern etc. and knew nothing about ferts, or planted tanks. I did however understand a lot of the basic principles of aquariums etc. because I was keeping/breeding fish for many years. When I made the jump to planted tanks I was blown away at how little I actually knew about aquatics so I have spent hours a day reading and applying since then trying to grasp all the different variables and principles at play. In my mind I have a long way to go (simpleton) and that's why I'm here to hassle you folks

Yup that's me... here for higher learning was wondering where you went. Tank is a mess right now, I butchered my moss and AR mini is having some ca/mg deficiencies I think so just added some to the mix as I was not using a GH booster. I really have been spending to much time watching my new shrimp. Its that dam breeder side of me I don't think I will ever shake. Great to see you your on here.

I will say, this forum is the most educational one i have been to by far. Especially the "masters" of the forum (like pikez, dennis, burr, etc), they provide me with endless learning! Really fascinating.

I will start one next week but it won't have too much to learn from on my end. Probably a lot to learn from with information provided to correct my issues though

Haha! sounds like me. People learning from my errors. My journal is up and running but since i have editted the tank i havent updated my journal. Its mostly consisted of a bunch of images and some chit chat now and then.

The tank looks great.. the moss tree and the grass lawn is well filled in.
For the AR on top, I would replace it with something green. Do you have a pocket of substrate there to plant?

That waterfall tank is awesome, love the tree. Monte carlo might work up top

Thanks rajkm, yes there is a pocket about 2" deep of ADA Amazonia. I definitely agree that red is out of place there and something green would be much better suited.

Hey Burr740, Thanks for the compliment. I'm partial to the waterfall myself but that's only because I made it but sometimes I wish I didn't have it as it really limits my options of what I can do with the tank. I guess I will just have to get another later this year I thought of MC but what would you think of something like Rio Negro Giant there? I'm thinking it would kind of suit well for what is supposed to be cliff type flats but I have no experience with it so I'm not sure it would be a good placement for requirements.

Never done it personally but I know it can be attached to wood. @Jason had a big log covered in MC not too long ago

Syn will look good but the giant is too bushy, I think something that would look like a tree will give good perspective. Belem, lago,manus which grow longer could fit the bill, however they will need constant maintenance to keep it short and look nice. Well try giant and see.
On the wall face add some mini pelia mounds. Might look good.

Amano shrimp you say.. By chance do you rescue and shelter homeless Amano's? I joke, but I have a few that will be homeless in the near future if they don't stop eating my AR mini.

Question for you. Should I be supplementing their feeding? Up until this point I have not added anything extra to the tank. I have less then 10 Amano's and an unknown number of Cherries in a 75gal tank. If so what do you recommend and how often.

Oh that sounds perfect actually. If I can get it to hang a bit like @Jason it would give it some of that vine like appearance.

Love the idea of mini pelia, It will definitely clear up some of that boring rock face issue that bugs me.

Awesome a fellow Nuck... Where in Canada are you from if you don't mind me asking? I'm from Winnipeg, MB. In regards to the Amano's I would gladly take them off your hands if bob barkers fit the bill (the price is right). Amano's are not just algae eaters they do need some protein in their diet and are true scavengers. Adding a high quality fish food is a good way to supplement their diet in addition to the algae they graze on in the tank. I am raising my newly morphed Amano's on 250 micron NorthFin premium fish food, it's only ingredient is 100% whole Antarctic Krill and they go nuts for it but any hi quality protein rich food will do. In my main tank they get the left overs from my CPD's Nutrafin Bug Bites tropical fish formula.
